The Fourth of July

Happy post 4th of July. Here's a quote sent to me by a friend. This is Frederick Douglass speaking about the 4th

On July 5, 1852, Douglass gave a speech at an event commemorating the signing of theDeclaration of Independence, held at Rochester's Corinthian Hall. It was biting oratory, inwhich the speaker told his audience, "This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You mayrejoice, I must mourn." And he asked them, "Do you mean, citizens, to mock me, byasking me to speak to-day?"Within the now-famous address is what historian Philip S. Foner has called "probably themost moving passage in all of Douglass' speeches."What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer; a day that reveals to him, morethan all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constantvictim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; yournational greatness, swelling vanity; your sound of rejoicing are empty and heartless; yourdenunciation of tyrants brass fronted impudence; your shout of liberty and equality, hollowmockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanks-givings, with all yourreligious parade and solemnity, are to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, andhypocrisy -- a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. Thereis not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are thepeople of the United States, at this very hour.full text: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part4/4h2927t.html

Enron founder and destroyer Kenneth Lay lay dead in Aspen, Colorado as you read and I speak. Seems that during his life and times Lay's company was one of the largest contributors to the Bush administraton and various Bush campaigns. Bush called him "Kenny Boy." How sweet and frat-boyish. Here's who Bush's rep Tony Snow had to say on behalf of the Prez and Lay's death: "The president had described Ken Lay as an acquaintance. And many of the president's acquaintances have died during his time in office." Ouch. Guess they like to kick a man when he's down...or dead.

What do the Enron victim's have to say about his passing? "The only sad ending to this story is that Ken Lay will never see a day in prison." For more - Click here
